London Medicated Health Restorer – Baltimore

London Medicated Health Restorer – Baltimore

13 April 2011

Apple-Touch-IconADavid Kyle from Thousand Oaks, California was the winner of the London Medicated Health Restorer bottle (pictured below) which was Lot 163 in Glass Works Ides of March Auction 91 this March 2011. Glass Works wrote up the listing as follows…

LONDON – MEDICATED – HEALTH RESTORER – S.A. FOUTZ / BALTIMORE MD”, Maryland, ca. 1855 – 1870, yellowish topaz, 6-sided, 9”h, smooth base, applied tapered double collar mouth, 90% original label is on two panels. A 1/4” stress crack stemming from an open bubble exists in the neck. Another stress crack, this one is 1 3/4” in length, follows the edge of the base along two panels. Only a few known examples and the only one we know of with the original label. Ex. Ferdinand Meyer, IV collection. Winning Bid: $ 1,800 (11 Bids) Estimate: $ 1,000 – $ 1,500

As a coincidence, I was alerted to a great example of this elusive bottle at the Baltimore Antique Bottle Show this past March and was able to get the example from Phil Edmonds for $4,750. While tracking down information, I was led to Jim Hagenbuch of Glass Works Actions who told me about the upcoming lot in his auction and that my father had sold it to Jim about 10 years ago for Jims collection. I did not know this.

Of special interest is that this bottle also comes in a strawberry puce color. One sold for $7,000 in John Pastors American Glass Gallery Auction 2 in May 2009. See Picture of Lot Below.

Glass – Just So Many Colors

In a recent FOHBC article, I wrote about the many colors of Antique Bottles and Glass. Adorning the three page spread were small photos of glass from just my collection. I assembled the art again for review…

African Stomach Bitters letterhead – Bitters Bottles Supplement

Apple-Touch-IconAAfrican Stomach Bitters are really neat Western Bitters Bottles that are relatively inexpensive and fun to collect. They can be found rather crude and in varying shades of amber. I have also managed to add some really cool trade cards from eBay and a shipping crate I won from Pacific Glass Auctions (now American Bottle Auctions) in March 2003. The crate reads CELEBRATED AFRICAN STOMACH BITTERS SPRUANCE  STANLEY & CO. SOLE AGENTS.

The Carlyn Ring and W.C. Ham listing in Bitters Bottles is as follows:

Round, Amber, LTC, Applied mouth and Tooled lip, 2 piece and 4 piece molds, Common.

Ferraro Visit – July 2009

Elizabeth and I had the honor of a personal visit with Bob and Connie Ferraro of Boulder City, Nevada. We drove from Los Angeles after the 2009 FOHBC Pomona National Show. Our visit included a nice lunch in town (Bob was once the Mayor) and tour of new Hoover Dam Museum that the Ferraro’s are very proud of. Bob epitomizes the best in our hobby. As a new collector, I introduced myself to him at a past Baltimore Show and we have since become friends.

Bob has a wonderful Antique Figural Bottle, Binninger and Nevada Bottle & Go With Collection. I’ve posted a few pictures…

Bill Ham Visit – Some Extraordinary Pontiled Bottles

Bill Ham Visit – Some Extraordinary Pontiled Bottles

10 April 2011

On 06 December 2009, Elizabeth and I visited with Bill and Cindy Ham in Lakeport, California after the Auburn 49er Show. We had a nice dinner and Bill uncorked some of his recent harvest wine from his Dancing Dog vineyard. What a great evening.

We spend the later part of the evening looking at his bottles. Bill specializes in pontiled medicines, pontiled bitters with the word ‘Stomach’ and Whiskey Bottles. These are some of the legends I have heard about, many from the Carlyn Ring Collection. After spending the night, I awakened to take an early morning run in the countryside with their two dogs. Scary in the dark.

Then, morning coffee and an in depth revisit with the bottles to complete this segment of a wonderful trip. A couple of bottles I was drooling over are noted below…

C 81 BROWN & DRAKE CATAWBA BITTERS, extremely rare lady’s leg, metallic pontil mark.
B 59 DR. BELL’S GOLDEN TONIC BITTERS, extremely rare figural bell.
F 63 FOERSTER’S TEUTONIC BITTERS | CHICAGO, extremely rare chestnut flask with handle, metallic pontil mark. Only about 5 or 6 known.
T 51 OLD DR. TOWNSEND’S CELEBRATED STOMACH BITTERS, killer matching left and right handled Chestnut, rough pontil mark.
H 60 HART’S VIRGINIA AROMATIC BITTERS extremely rare, rectangular, metallic pontil.
P 108 PLANTATION BITTERS XX, extremely rare, without DRAKES.

A few pictures are below…

Richard Tucker Visit – October 2010

Tucker & Fuss

Richard and Sandor Deep in Bottle Discussion

Pam Selenak, Sandor Fuss and I were able to meet in Newport Beach, CA. over at Cathy and Richard Tucker’s for a light lunch one Sunday afternoon last October 2010. This is the first time I have spent some personal time with Richard and enjoyed the hospitality the Tucker’s put forth.

Of course the discussion quickly turned to Richard’s wonderful flasks. Sandor and Richard had them lined up on the kitchen table and other flat areas discussing each incredible flask. I kept looking at the Corn for the Worlds, probably my favorite Baltimore flask.

I managed to take a few pictures trying to catch some of the groupings and colors. This is only a small part of this award winning collection.
