Mystery Pig Bottle

Anybody recognize the Pig Bottle?

Hello,

I have had this bottle for 45 years and have tried to learn about it with no luck. It is about 6 1/2″ long and is pottery. It has a schooner embossed on the back. Could you please refer me to a person who would know it’s history.

Thank you,  Rita

Royal Kent Hop Bitters

Another interesting Bitters Bottle from Australia:

Hi Ferdinand,

A message from Bill Ham regarding bitters not listed in the bitters books got me to thinking!

Recently a stunning bottle turned up which has never been seen, not even a piece has been found until recently! There is an aqua cabin bitters from Australia – Royal Kent Hop Bitters embossed on the front panel, with a large crown trade mark, a superb bottle and a rare one too!  These have been listed in Ham’s book.

Recently, one turned up in a stunning green / yellow / amber colour – one of those colours that is somewhat in between the colours mentioned! This has a collar under the lip which is different to the standard aqua one, so probably was made by a different glassworks. Anyway, here is a picture, the only one known!  It is now in a good bitters collection.

Cheers,
Travis.

eBay Scam Exposed!

You know, if Facebook helped in the overthrow of the corrupt regimes in Tunisia and Egypt, why can’t it help us expose a fraud on eBay. Thanks to some initial detective work by Michael George and some alert moves by bottle collectors, this scam was exposed. I suspect it may resurface again, but great job everyone! Hopefully no one was taken. Let’s keep our eyes out.

Dr Grant’s Dandelion Bitters, New York.

Grants Dandelion Bitters

Dr Grants Dandelion Bitters – ABCR Auctions

Dr Grant’s Dandelion Bitters, New York.

20 June 2011 (R•020315)

Apple-Touch-IconAJust in from Down Under from Travis Dunn. This appears to be an unlisted bitters.

Hi Ferdinand,

We have a very interesting bottle coming up in the next auction in late July, early August. It is a tad on the bland side, but is exceptionally rare.

It is an aqua cabin bitters which is embossed around the four shoulders: Dr Grant’s, Dandelion Bitters, New York.

There are only two or three of these known to collectors. Although it has New York on it, this is much like the New York Hop Bitters in that it is actually an Australian piece. The Melbourne company of Shell & Zabel produced this bitters in the late 1800s, they were a very short lived company and so very few of these would have ever been made.

The same vendor was lucky enough to have found a superb American gothic pickle many years ago. We believe that this was from the West Willington Glassworks judging by the pattern? It has a deep ground pontil.

Another item that may be of interest to US collectors is an octagonal Bazin, Perfumer, Philadelphia pot lid.

We have a gallery preview of every lot that will be on offer in Auction 5 at: http://www.abcrauctions.com/images/august_2011_preview/images.php

Kind Regards,

Travis Dunn
